A favorite tale about my dad had to do with the big tat on his forearm. By the time I noticed it, it was already fading and smudged. But when he got it in the late 40's, about the time he met my mom, it was a beautiful tattoo of a heart with wings, with a dagger going thru it, and a scroll under the heart with the word "Helen" in a neat florid script.
My mother's name was Margaret.
The story was that Dad hadn't actually intended on marrying Mom, but a rich older woman named Helen. That disastrously fell all to hell, and Dad cleaned up himself and his sorry attitude and made Mom an honest woman. The tattoo was a dimming memory of what could have been.
