Artemis 1 will be gone for between 26 and 42 days. It'll take one to two weeks to get to the moon, where Orion will swoop down close to the lunar surface and use the gravitational kick it receives to enter a so-called "distant retrograde orbit."
Retrograde means that it will orbit the moon in the opposite direction to the one in which the moon spins. Orion will stay in that orbit for between six and 19 days. Then it will swing back down toward the moon for another kick to help power its nine- to 19-day journey back to Earth.

The Artemis Rocket
So I was just looking at a graphic of the upcoming liftoff to the moon. And they had a long list of trivia facts about the rocket. One of them was the number of days it will take to get to the moon, 8 to 14. Why is that a range? Why wouldn't that be an exact number?

No idea about the wide range of days mentioned

Without reading a thing about it.
I’ll bet they have interim goals and have padded the timeline so any delay in reaching those goals doesn’t count as a fail

They had the trajectory for Webb down to the second. They must have some plan A, B, and C stype stuff planned along the way that they will wait to decide based on circumstances.

That's pretty common in the industry. They always pad their timelines. But in reality, they have the scheduling down pretty tight.

Re: The Artemis Rocket
I'm guessing since it's the first mission and it's unmanned, they are in no rush and will take it slow and go. #5 in the chart above mentions staying in orbit and checking systems including the solar panels. Later when it's manned with life support systems, then it's get there, do the mission and get back ASAP.

So worth it when we have drinking water issues in Michigan, military veterans who need help, and an education system in dire need of funding.

Good thing we didn't have too many SaltyD's back in the old days or we would still be driving wagons and plowing with wooden sticks.

Like cancelling a rocket program is going to solve any of those problems. I heard that on the radio. That has to be a huge problem. They keep that fuel at -423 F (or some insane temp). Obviously, that can't be done in those huge tanks sitting on a launch pad for an extended period of time.
This fuel leak is exactly what they encountered on the last trial run in June, but they said it wouldn't be a problem.

https://www.wpxi.com/news/science/engin ... 3KRBOAOZ4/Regardless of all the technical snags, thunderstorms ultimately would have prevented a liftoff. Dark clouds gathered over the launch site as soon as Blackwell-Thompson halted the countdown, with thunder echoing across the coast.

Totally normal for any new rocket system. Scrubbs like this have happened since rockets were invented.Animal wrote: ↑Mon Aug 29, 2022 1:11 pmI heard that on the radio. That has to be a huge problem. And they keep trying to convince us the Earth is round and not in the center of the solar system.
Even Kyrie knows that ain't true!
