Does the deferred money not count towards luxury tax or something? Why structure a deal like this?

is it just a ridiculous thought for an owner to get some merchandise company to pay a player some huge salary to advertise a product and then reimburse them? Like college football did to pay players and dodge the NCAA rules.

The Bonilla deal actually saved the Wilponzi's some money. It wasn't as dumb as people make it out to be.

P.S. He has a SECOND deferred payment coming in from the Mets & Orioles for $500,000 per year!

Yeah. Rules suck.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
