They'll still finish 2nd in the division.

3 years removed from being an All-Star and he takes a $15 million pay cut to play for a team that will lose 100 games.
Brutal.

Can't strike anyone out, can't get it over the plate really.

Kinda hard to get jobs that way, I think.

P.S. The only way he's going to stick around is learning to pitch, 'cause he can't blow them away anymore

Might've wanted a low-pressure job where he could prove he still "has it."

The Mets expect to contend, and everyone knows him and how he's performed lately in NY.

P.S. This article claims it was the Padres that made the better offer
I’m hearing Aroldis Chapman turned down more money from Padres to sign with Royals for one year at $3.75M. He wants to close and he’ll do that in KC. Marlins offered $2M.

It's nice that defense is not ignored as in previous years.

Max Fried loses his 2023 arbitration case and will earn $13.5 million instead of his $15 million asking price.

Is the $1.5 million really worth pissing off a young stud pitcher? What am I missing here?

He's been the Ace since Soroka got hurt. Maybe they needed that to add to the $2.8 million they gave to Soroka for the 2023 season? Who knows? Soroka has missed 2 years with that twice-repaired Achilles. Hope he is good now.

As much as I liked the Justin Upton trade when it happened, watching Fried hurts now.

 A 6-year deal for a pitcher who turns 37 in a few months.

Looks like the Padres stretched this one out to help with their Luxury Tax situation.

He was solid with Texas but defintely seems to have a bigger reputation nowadays. I think it is because he throws like 12 different pitches now.

Defintely a weird contract. He really isn't a true ace so help with luxury tax issues sounds about right.

Holy shit!!!
I just looked up this deal and the whole $108 million is guaranteed!

Are they going to move him to the bullpen in a couple of years? Are they hoping he retires after 2 or 3 years?

Crazy deal!

Shit contract in about 4 years
Sources: Padres, Manny Machado finalizing $350M extension

Star third baseman Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres are finalizing an 11-year, $350 million contract extension, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN. Machado helped turn around the franchise. He'll stay as the ascendant Padres seek their first championship.

Machado said earlier this week he intended to opt out of the final five years and $150 million of his current contract with the Padres following the season after preliminary negotiations on an extension broke down. While Machado had set a Feb. 16 deadline to reach a new deal, conversations continued.

At 30 years old, Machado is coming off arguably the best season of his career, hitting .298/.366/.531 with 32 home runs and 102 RBIs. He finished second in National League MVP voting and led the Padres to the National League Championship Series, where they were ousted by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Machado's arrival in San Diego in 2019 on a 10-year, $300 million deal signaled a new era for the Padres, who have yet to win a World Series in their 54-year history. Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. joined the Padres as a rookie during Machado's first season in San Diego, and while the team struggled to a 70-92 finish, it thrived in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, got a significant boost with the acquisition of star outfielder Juan Soto last year and continued to spend this winter with the signing of shortstop Xander Bogaerts to an 11-year, $280 million contract.
