Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field during the first quarter of Monday night’s game between the Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, his team said. It’s not clear what caused his cardiac arrest.
Cardiac arrest results from electrical disturbances that cause the heart to suddenly stop beating properly.
In cardiac arrest, death can result quickly if steps aren’t taken immediately. “Cardiac arrest may be reversed if CPR is performed and a defibrillator shocks the heart and restores a normal heart rhythm within a few minutes,” according to the American Heart Association.
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, is in "critical condition" in the hospital after suffering cardiac arrest when he collapsed mid-game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night, his team said.
Hamlin's heartbeat was restored on the field and he was taken to a Cincinnati hospital, the Bills said.

Anti-vaxx? Fuck off, I’m not anti vaccines
As for the incident, the only similar story I can remember was a little league baseball player getting hit squarely in the chest with a fastball that caused his heart to stop. This was like ten years ago or so, one of those 1 in a billion things

that's pretty much exactly what happened in this instance. The hit wasn't very violent at all. But the injured guy got hit square in the chest by a receiver running across the field. The injured guy got up, stood there, and then fell over like he blacked out. You could tell it wasn't some concussion or broken bone or having the wind knocked out. From the moment it happened you could tell there was something different about it.

Yep. What was surprising to me was why wasn’t their a defib machine on site? Nine mins of CPR and no defibrillator?
And yes, it's why Little Leaguers often wear protective vests.
P.S. And if they didn't do CPR and defibrillation within 3 minutes, his chances went way down (40% survival if under three minutes; 5% survival if more than three minutes). The hope is they got his heart beating quickly enough to prevent brain damage.

its safe to say it was quite a while before anyone did CPR on Saltydog.
