The first two hostages released in October were Americans. Released under no conditions. Not sure why the "no Americans" released story even gained traction.

I think they did what they did to bring attention to the conflict. And provoke the response they got from Israel. If killing jews was the goal, they certainly made their goal tougher to achieve.
