Wi fi question

#1

Post by peterosehaircut »

Ok here's my issue. My shop is a metal building a little over a hundred feet from my house. In the summer when I have my overhead doors open I get a good wifi signal inside. In colder weather when the doors are shut it is very weak. I stopped in at best buy last weekend and asked if they had a wifi booster with a receiver I could mount outside my shop with a transmitter I could put inside. They said no. Anyone know of anything like that?

There are WiFi boosters, extenders, and repeaters.

You'll need to know which one is best suited for your needs.

I would think that if your shop and your house (with your internet signal) are both on the same electric meter then this would be a great solution.

I use Starlink and they sell a mesh extender that is ridiculously simple. I think they are only around $100 and you just plug them into 110 v plug. They connect themselves and they extend the wifi signal in whatever direction you installed them. 100 feet would be no problem at all. If you had a way to install one a little over halfway, or at the least at the fartherest direction that has a plug toward the shop. sometimes just getting them located so they have a more clear path to the shop and then put another one at the shop to accept the signal and boost it inside the shop. For example, if you have a window that faces the shop, place a mesh node on the sill of that window. Then have another one in a window of the shop.

The main router, hooked to the satellite dish, is on the lower floor. It sends wifi signals thru the house. The mesh node is upstairs and it gets signal from the main router and provides wifi signals thru the upstairs. Anything upstairs will search for wifi and connect to whichever signal is stronger.

Those 120 V powerline ethernet extenders work best if they’re both plugged into the same phase of the 220 that’s going into your home.

I have a five story condo with the wi-fi coming in on the bottom floor. I use Eero and have a strong signal even on the top floor and stream the Roku seamlessly through it

Last year, (around this time) I went to Best Buy to get my Grandson a drone. When I asked the guy in the store where the drones are he didn't even know what a drone was!

A fucking drone!!!

i honestly feel like this is a problem that some aluminum foil could help out in some way.

Exactly. Mount a double antenna on the roof, wrap a whole box of aluminum foil around both and climb up there several times a day and point the antennas in different directions.

I was going to mention that.

I read an article where it said to put foil behind your router and turn it to direct the signal as needed.

I don't think that WiFi routers are Republicans.

This is what I got.

I'll try plugging it in to both the house and the shop to see if it solves the problem.
My house and shop are both on the same meter, I'll try that if not.
