I've not been a fan of Christmas for a very long time. Usually got the shit end of the stick from the ex and a bunch of flack for shit I didn't do. I do like gerontology out in the snow, snow mobiling, snow shoeing, winter hikes, and the winter festivals that are an excuse to day drink and wander about picturesque towns. I know you ducked that live down south can't understand the appeal of a hot mulled wine while walking on a frozen lake and looking at snow sculptures but it's getting to be that time of year here. So all it's northerners, what town near you had the best winter festivals?

There are quite a few around here (metro Detroit) that get going in January and February. Ice sculpting of course is a huge part of most. I didnt mind them in my 20's but now I just hate the cold in general. Skiing is a blast though and a resort in the Upper Peninsula was just named the best in the US. Building snow forts with the kids is (was) always amusing. Once the kids are grown and out of the house I see a move south.

We had our first snow on the ground before Halloween. Very mild temps for most of November but the last week it stayed. Has been here since but they are calling for a high of 5C (41F) on Saturday so it should melt aboot half of it.

Where? In The Onion?
I googled "best skiing resorts in US" and out of the top 15, none of them were in Michigan or Wisconsin. Maybe he meant that one of the skiing resorts in the Upper Peninsula was voted the Best Ski Resort in the Upper Pensinsula?

I freely admit its just one of those things I heard in the ether of life. I have no concrete source. I dont know where I heard it but it was either on TV or the radio. I do recall being surprised when I heard it but then I forgot about it until this thread about winter activities. There is good skiing in Michigan though, especially the U.P.

My uncle had a place in Roscommon, aboot 50 miles south of Mackinaw. Snowmobiling was great and we would tube the Sable river in the summer.
