Speed of Bullet v Breaking Glass
Here's two guys speaking jibberish that no one can understand. However, their video of a bullet versus the speed of glass breaking is pretty interesting. I'm not sure which part is more interesting, the results or how they filmed it. or that the cruising speed of a 747 airplane is almost that of a bullet fired from a pistol.

how about the fact that a 747 cruises at around 600 mph. I think it said that the bullet was going 768 mph. It's hard to even imagine that big fucking plane is going almost as fast as that bullet.CentralTexasCrude wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 1:16 amChill out. I watched it right after you posted it. Bullet goes 800 MPH but glass breaking from said bullet goes 3,000 MPH. Tried to figure the physics behind that and gave up.

Actually I always assumed a bullet would be traveling a lot faster (at the muzzle) than any plane other than a jet.Animal wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 1:22 amhow about the fact that a 747 cruises at around 600 mph. Re: Speed of Bullet v Breaking Glass
i have never really given it much thought. i have loaded enough bullets, though, to know that the speed of typical 22 bullets is about the speed of sound. and I know the speed of sound is around 1100 feet per second. but i never really thought of that stuff in mph. Looking it up, a subsonic 22LR bullet travels about 700 mph. the speed of sound is 767 mph.CentralTexasCrude wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 1:34 amActually I always assumed a bullet would be traveling a lot faster (at the muzzle) than any plane other than a jet.Animal wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 1:22 amhow about the fact that a 747 cruises at around 600 mph. a hunting bullet, .243 caliber or .270 caliber of .308 caliber travel around 2500 to 3000 fps. or around 1700 to 2000 mph. still slower than that glass breaking.

A jet got a good tailwind in the jetstream and hit something like 820MPH.Animal wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 1:22 amhow about the fact that a 747 cruises at around 600 mph. Be careful when you follow the masses. Sometimes the "M" is silent

That’s ground speed not air speed. Ground speed is airspeed plus wind speed affects on the plane.

Yes it states that in the article, while they were flying faster than the speed of sound according to ground speed, they didn't actually break the sound barrier due to tail winds.

you mean that if you are flying at less than the speed of sound, but the tail winds make you so that you are going more than the speed of sound, you won't break the sound barrier? the sound barrier is a function of ground speed?peterosehaircut wrote: ↑Sat Feb 24, 2024 4:16 amYes it states that in the article, while they were flying faster than the speed of sound according to ground speed, they didn't actually break the sound barrier due to tail winds.

Re: Speed of Bullet v Breaking Glass
The sound barrier is a function of a object moving through air. The article was about a airplane exceeding what would be the sound barrier with ground speed. Think of it this way. You’re in a train car, growing heart ever speed you want to specify. You stand at the middle of the car, and throw a tennis ball towards the end going the direction you’re moving to an outside observer the tennis ball is moving faster than what it looks like you were throwing from you throwing it. If you throwAway from the direction you’re going and outside observer thinks it’s moving slower than what you think it’s moving. It’s all in the frame of reference.Animal wrote: ↑Mon Feb 26, 2024 1:51 pmyou mean that if you are flying at less than the speed of sound, but the tail winds make you so that you are going more than the speed of sound, you won't break the sound barrier? the sound barrier is a function of ground speed?peterosehaircut wrote: ↑Sat Feb 24, 2024 4:16 amYes it states that in the article, while they were flying faster than the speed of sound according to ground speed, they didn't actually break the sound barrier due to tail winds.
