Checking in and I see the forum hasn't moved much..

Back from vacation in the DR, what an interesting place the Dominican Republic is.

The Dominican has its shit together far more than Haiti, which Haiti has people shooting planes and why American in general, not the airline, dont fly there..

Punta Cana is interesting. They land your ass on the tarmac and you take a shuttle bus to the main thatch roof terminal for customs.

Our resort was 4 hours from the airport and it allowed us to see the absolute best and worst of the DR.. slums with trash everywhere to the rainforest of the DR that left me speechless and felt like we were traveling through the floating mountains of Pandora.

We traveled with Boston Red sox hats and gave them as a gift/tip as we saw fit, those that received them was elated. Small gesture but huge response. Exchange rate is favorable, being 1 American dollar to almost 60 Dominican pesos.

The most disappointing part of the DR is the water is not the blue of the Bahamas, but more deeper green like Puerto Rico.. we have decided we will travel to the Bahamas or Bermuda going forward for the deep cobalt blue waters.

(sigh)

We were also moderately disappointed in the water at our resort in Punta Cana. It was nice and kind of clear but, yeah, you're kind of hoping for that clear blue picture perfect awesomeness when you're at a Caribbean beach.
4 hours is a long way to go from the airport. I don't think we'd have felt comfortable doing that but I'm glad it went smoothly.
Our resort was the Sanctuary Cap all inclusive and was about 15 minutes from the airport. We liked the resort itself and the people were very friendly but the food was kind of "meh".
You can tell that the DR is really trying to beef up their tourism. I'm not sure we'll be back but I didn't hate it.
From our experience, Bahamas or Turks and Caicos, are far better.
We want to try Aruba next.

Can confirm. I have a daughter in law that's Peruvian and just as cute as can be. My son married WAY out of his league.

My friend just went to Aruba a couple months back, said the island is safe and AirBnB and rental car is the way to go.

For the water and the people we will continue to favor Nassau or Bermuda, of which Bermuda is our all time favorite island. Our last trip we rented a 20 foot pontoon boat, self piloted and it was the greatest thing we have ever done while on vacation.

Good to see so many old names, makes me think back to the zoo that was the original forums and will always put a smile on my face!

Been coming and going as a fart in the wind, the company I work for lost the contract at the site where I had spent the last 10 years of my life. I was made a good offer to continue with the new contract holder but my company made me an offer to continue with them and try to salvage another contract coming up the year, so I opted to stay and have a new site and new staff I have been working with since getting back from vacation.
