90% one year survival, which is amazing for this type of procedure.

Well, that is very encouraging. It is still amazing what these doctors can do now.

Megman, I'll pass along my only experience with transplants, perhaps it will help with some optimism. The husband of a girl I went to school with ended up in really poor health and deemed to need a heart transplant. Unfortunately, he was in bad enough shape that he didn't qualify for one. They both switched to a plant based diet and I think after a year or so, his health had improved enough that he was put on the transplant list. He still wasn't in great shape, this was more his odds of surviving had improved enough to merit the transplant. In time, a donor match became available and the transplant was performed. This was about 6-7 years ago.

Within a few months, he was back at work. Architect or something like that, so no great physical exertion needed. Long story short, he continues to improve and the operation can only be summed up as a resounding success. They are both retired now and living life to the fullest with the kids and grandkids. Just did a several week tour of the English countryside this past spring. So, while things perhaps seem gloomy now, keep in mind, life is going to get better for you.

I'm old enough to remember the first heart transplant back in 1967. Dr Christian Barnard of South Africa was constantly in the news. Back then, a heart transplant just seemed like science fiction to me. Almost 60 years later, it still amazes me.

Good luck, I have a friend that is waiting on a lung transplant as well and he has the right attitude while remaining hopeful

It's amazing what they can do these days. You're in good hands.

Hopefully you'll be able to have the surgery here in the States. Mayo Clinic in Minnesota perhaps?

I'm just right at the start of the process. I had a friend who was going through it and she was on her 14th test.

Average length of the lungs lasting is 7.5 yrs at the moment. She said most have some complications after 5. And I'll be on meds for life, which is nothing new at the moment.

Plus the anti-rejection drugs are good at shutting down livers and kidneys.

I'm looking forward to better health but scared shitless at the same time.

I don’t remember what you need to know classes in high school about the joy of aging and the ailments we’ll be facing.
