NASA Begins Countdown for First Moon Shot in 53 Years

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA began the countdown Monday for humanity’s first launch to the moon in 53 years.
The 32-story Space Launch System rocket is poised to blast off Wednesday evening with four astronauts. After a day in orbit around Earth, their Orion capsule will propel them to the moon and back. There are no stops — just a quick U-turn around the moon. The nearly 10-day flight will end with a splashdown in the Pacific.
“Our team has worked extremely hard to get us to this moment,” said launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson. “Certainly all indications are right now we are in excellent, excellent shape.”
Managers said the rocket is doing well following the latest round of repairs. Forecasters said the weather should cooperate.
NASA’s Artemis II mission should have soared in February, but was grounded by hydrogen fuel leaks. The leaks were fixed, but then a helium pressurization line became clogged, forcing a return to the hangar late last month. The rocket returned to the pad 1 1/2 weeks ago, and its U.S.-Canadian crew arrived at the launch site on Friday.
Unlike Apollo, which sent only men to the moon from 1968 through 1972, Artemis’ debut crew includes a woman, person of color and a non-U.S. citizen.

I am really pumped up for this. I hope nothing goes wrong. We are all due some good news even though I'm not sure how excited people get for this kind of thing anymore. I'm getting a little tired of the news reports focusing on the stories about how the astronauts "look like me" and how diverse the crew is and how there's one of each different thing, etc.

It kind of is a big deal that's getting lost in the shuffle. I think it's pretty cool.
Yes, the crew seems designed to "check boxes" for sure but I won't let that get me down unless they fuck something up.

I don't get why you guys are even slightly upset about women or people of color on this flight. Go back and look at the crew of Challenger. There were two women, a black guy and an Asian guy. That was 1986. This isn't something new.

So far so good. 18,000 mph in under 10 minutes. and they said that rocket was 32 stories high on the launch pad.
isn't that the same rocket that they plan to use to go to Mars?

I always wonder how loud it is when it takes off? Like at what range would covering your ears do no good because it's so loud?
as for police at my door, I've had phone (landline) problems for about a year, there's a company burying new fiber optic cables and they keep cutting my providers cables, now they're done in my area but when it rains i have internet / landline phone troubles (internet is dsl). So we got a quick , pretty strong thunderstorm and my internet acted up and that's when the cop knocked, he said they had 911 hangup from my house and I was no way, so we looked at my landline phone and it ststaed phone in use but it wasn't so he went on his way, after I "chewed his leg off" . (what else would you expect from me?) It was somewhat worrying to look out and see a state cop car, but he laughed it off. I was shaking so bad he offered to call an ambulance. He looked to be about 22 or so, I just ended up with "thanks for your service , you people have a tough job" and off he went.

I'm old enough to remember when Joe Biden left those astronauts hanging up in space. Thankfully Elon rescued them.

damn they said today that the Orion capsule is in "high earth orbit". Which they said was about 46,000 miles from the earth.
In comparison, the space station flies in "low earth orbit" about 225 miles from earth.
If the earth was a basketball, then the distance to the moon would be 23 feet 7 inches. And the moon would be a tennis ball.
This morning the moon was full driving to work. I was thinking about how large a full moon looks. and I was thinking that if I was at the moon looking back at the earth, the earth would be about 4 times bigger than the moon. You just can't take a picture and get that kind of perspective. There are only a few people that have ever gotten to experience that.
