Does anyone collect coins?

I’m getting bored sitting around so it’s time for a hobby.
Going through all the loose change we’ve collected this past decade.
Any chance of finding something valuable?
Is legal to sell pennies for their copper properties?

Normally I'd just insult you and make fun of some statement you'd made but this place needs to talk more.
The modern penny is a thin copper sheet pressed into a zinc core. There is not enough value in either to n make them worth recycling. The cost of the penny is more in manufacturing a we all know.
Now Penny's going back to the 40's were copper byt even then not enough weight is in them.
If you want to look for value in coins you best bet is v checking b for silver. Generally silver coins are worth 10 × face value. So check for pre-1970's quarters, and 1976 or older half dollars and silver dollars. Look at the edges, if you do not see a clear line in the coin you've got one. Those are not taken out of circulating as quickly so if you buy boxes of rolled coins you can some. Also, because the coin star machines go by weight as well as size, they will reject silver coins and fall into the reject slot. People don't always check that.
As for looking for error coins, or mint marks and shit like that. I've got no clue.

My father used to collect coins and bills. He used to have some pretty interesting stuff, like old Soviet coins and Confederate bills.

i did as a youngster up until my early twenties. At one time i had 10 bags of lincoln wheat pennies with 5000 pennies per bag, suppsoedly unsearched, but I loked thru maybe 2 bags and there was nothing. What I made out best was buying gold proof coins from the mint, it's expensive to buy and many would advise against it but the value of gold did go up over the years , but unfortunately the x wife probably stole 2 or 3 thousand dollars worth. I also had silver proof sets and those gained value over the years but all my coins that a kid would collect they didn't really go up in value but didn't lose. You may want to call a coins store, get a big bag of wheat pennies and just look thru them , that's if you're just looking for something to do, probably won't find anything of value, but you never know, even if someone has searched thru, say, 5000 pennies maybe they missed one, or if you are thinking more for an investment just speak to coin store about cheapest gold they have, some stuff would just cost whatever gold is worth but proof coins would probably be a little more. I never researched but I think gold is like mcdonalds, i don't think theyve ever lost money / went down in value.

For a while during the early to mid 70's, my mom quit being a nurse to work as a clerk for Houston's then big major grocery store. Pretty quickly she learned just what people thought were worthless old coins they'd use at face value, which often came out as valuable antique coins worth a relatively decent bit. Old Indian head pennies, sliver dollars used as quarters, 80 year old (for the time) dimes, coins like that. She was able to collect every date penny from after the Civil War up to the mid 60's, many duplicates, and not a few in almost pristine condition, as well as good collection of half-dollars and dollar coins. And people were spending them like they were just another damn coin. Unfortunately I have no idea what happened to her collection, and I fear one of my nieces made off with it after Mom died. It helped, of course, that it was practically a cash-only economy then, no one but high end places and fancy restaurants took credit cards.
These days, I don't see coin collecting being quite as easy as it was then.

my wedding ring is a 1888 morgan silver dollar thats been pressed into a ring. thats the extent of my coin collection
