F-14 FUN FACT OF THE DAY

In order to park an F-14 Tomcat, the wings must be swept back to 75 degrees. The wings are in “oversweep” as they overlap the horizontal wing stabilizers, allowing them to fit more aircraft on the flight deck.

The wiring that put the wings into this position broke “a lot”. Lieutenant Commander Walt Winters, a former F-14 Tomcat electrician with 12 years of experience on the Turkey, had the following to say about the wiring that would set the wing sweep to 75 degrees:

Sometimes you would have to jury-rig it. And you're doing this while you're on top of the airplane. It's still running, the engines are hot, and the [flight crew] are still in there. You've got panels open, and the boss is yelling over the loudspeaker, 'Get the wings back!' Jets are landing right beside you at 150 miles an hour. And taking off. And sometimes it's raining.
did you know that the term "jury rig" is nautical and has nothing to do with a jury in a trial? Jury rig means that something on a boat is thrown together quickly with whatever is available.

I was going to beat the censor and say "hodor rigged"
since it's been somewhat dead.... I went to the local watering hole one night and I see my friend actually friends from school old neighborhood.Billings was there. There were maybe 12 people? they had tables all moved together. The get together was for Dave ,he was here visiting the rest of the family.Dave is gay .Billings was there because at the time he and daves sister were living together. So I'm talking to Billings ,saying hi to everyone, and I noticed our friend Craig was at the bar. So,I told billings There's Craig, and Billings was "I thought that was him but I never saw him with his hair so long".Now everyone at the big table was chatting away and it's the bar side of the restaurant so it was loud with people chatting away and I said "Oh yeah,he's a long haired cock sucker" and my voice is pretty loud and I mean everyone's conversation stopped, you could have heard a pindrop. Really stuck my foot in my mouth. So I said to Billings "this is almost as bad as the time I was at the muffler shop and they said the exhaust system was really messed up,and I said yeah, they really hodor rigged it under there" Billings said "slim" and pointed behind me and here's a table with 4 or 5 black people sitting there. I just said so long and off I went. Interesting about Craig,me and the Mexican racist partied a little with Craigs uncle and a few years later the guy killed a girl, murdered her. They couldn't prove it at first and while cops were working the case the uncle had a woman realtor show him a house and he attempted to choke her to death but changed his mind,so he quit choking her and told her he would make her dinner,so the realtor took off and called the cops,so they arrested him for that. He also at that time stole the money from a restaurant he worked at and took a car for a test drive and never brought it back. got arrested for all that and then got charged with the murder of the first girl. My ex wife was my wife back then and she ate at the restaurant for lunch and the guy was always trying to get her to go out with him. I later told her (after she had cheated on me a couple times) "just think if you would have went out with him you may have never come home" The only statement he had made why he killed the girl was "bitches are all the same, they just want my money".

That's actually totally unbelievable you mentioned Pearl Harbor. It's considered the worst Aerial surprise attack maybe in History behind only Pearl Harbor. Only this time it was in Italy, the attackers were the Luftwaffe and there was an Allied Liberty ship blown up in the harbor that carried a secret. Everything hushed up- Classified Secret. Wasn't declassified until 1959. Massive death toll.

No kidding. Bizarre. The port town was Bari on the East coast of Italy. After the Allies invaded, they had to mainly use Bari because Naples port was plugged by sunken ships by retreating Germans. Allies were building air strips NW of Bari to bomb southern Europe, so the surprise attack by the Luftwaffe. There was a Liberty ship tied up called the John Harvey. It had just started unloading it's cargo when the attack happened and it blew up. It carried 1,400 tons of chemical weapons- mustard gas. The bombing killed hundreds. The chemical weapons killed 2,000 because doctors had no idea what they were treating.

Yeah, Allied headquarters immediately sent in a team to start investigating. Included a chemical expert named Sullivan (I think) who confirmed it was mustard gas from the ship not the bombs. Somehow during the investigation, doctors noticed that some of the chemicals shrank cancer tumors. I have no idea of the history behind that.

And another tidbit from the book. Not 2 weeks before all this, the newly commission battleship USS Iowa was sailing from America to the Mediterranean when a torpedo specialist aboard a nearby new destroyer called the USS William D Porter forgot to take off a safety device and a torpedo was launched toward the Iowa. It ended up blowing up a thousands yards in it's wake. Bad enough, but Iowa was carrying President Roosevelt along with just about the entire top military brass (George Marshall- Chief of staff, Hap Arnold- head of the Air Force, head of Navy, etc) to Tehran for that conference. Navy head ordered the ship "arrested and sailed back home". I bet the skipper had a heart attack

FDR was top side watching the navy ships practicing anti-aircraft fire drills when the torpedo alert was sounded. He ordered his wheelchair rushed to the side of Iowa so he could see it coming in. After it was over an aide made a funny joke that stuck. The torpedo specialist was sentenced to prison for hard labor but FDR commuted it. It was said that after that whenever the USS William D Porter made contact with another ship they always said the same thing "Don't shoot- We're Republicans".  Served with distinction in the Pacific. The titanium skin of the D-21, a rare two-seat variant of the A-12 BLACKBIRD. Built for a CIA program code-named "Tagboard," it carried an unpiloted M-21 drone for missions over denied territory. Two D-21 were built, one was lost in an accident while attempting to launch an M-21 in 1966.

On January 31, 1968, the battle of Hue City began.

It was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War, lasting for more than a month in the winter of 1968. Vastly outnumbered, U.S. Marine, U.S. Army and ARVN units fought a viciously intense urban battle against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong until finally securing victory on March 2, 1968.

Initiated when Communist forces launched the Tet Offensive on the first night of the Vietnamese lunar New Year, attacking hundreds of military targets and civilian centers across the country, including the ancient city of Hue.

Despite enormous losses on both sides, including to the city itself, after a month of intense house-to-house street fighting, the U.S. Marines and Army would reclaim the city and drive the remaining NVA and VC units back north.
