(That we can address. Bonus points for solutions)
Homelessness.
Re-institutionalize the chronically homeless at various levels. Dorm-style barracks, regular inspections, no drugs or alcohol.
Serious problems get The Ward.
I know this would require some rethinking after we freed the loons in the 60's - 80's, but it must be done.

In no particular order:
The porous border
The treatment of veterans
Corporations paying no taxes
Middle class getting shafted
Spending

Term limits.
Limits on spending in elections. No ads from other than candidates.
Congress members are subject to all laws they enact.
All laws have a sunset clause and must be voted on again at sunset.
A balanced budget must be passed each year before any other routine legislation.

The press is making problem-solving nay impossible. And keeping Americans in a perpetual state of anxiety and unhappiness.

Used to watch the national news years ago when the press went apeshit over immigrants streaming across the border. Now, if you try to address the problem, they go apeshit.

Term limits only serves to put more power in the hands of un-elected behind-the-scenes bureaucrats, the permanent fixtures in Washington. Also the kind of people who use their power to attack political candidates or presidents they don't like.

You're right.
We should do nothing about plastics flowing into oceans.

Straws ain’t gonna get it. It’s going to take something much more serious than worrying about fleas on a gnat’s balls.

Start big or don't start at all?
I'm sure all the big oil barons will line up to support your theory.

'Muricans use about 600 million plastic straws every day, so yes that is part of the solution to plastic pollution. Duh.

Like every other Republican philosophy - if you cant fix it all at once, forget about taking any action at all to make it better.

Yes, of course. That must be what I meant.

I’d like to see something much bigger. A change in policies. You could approach it at that level, or look at what is effecting ocean life the most. That’s another approach. Like balloons seem to be a big thing for some reason.

That's idealism versus pragmatism. The thing is you can't approach it at the level of doing some unspecified thing that completely solves the problem, one because no such solution exists (do you have one?) and two because there's no agreement on doing so. Even reducing the number of straws is turned into part of y'alls culture wars. Reducing the pollution from some of the biggest waste products, plastic bags, straws, microbeads etc, that's something achievable to actually do in the short term.

I havent used a straw in a restaurant in years. Unless of course the drink already has one in it when they bring it; which irritates me. Its kinda strange...when I tell the waitress "No thanks, I dont need a straw" as shes throwing a handful at our table I usually get a look like I'm being a pain in the ass. Yes, its a little thing but if 10,000,000 people did this little thing it would obviously do something to help the problem.

Bottled water. You don’t live in a desert. It’s fashion. Stop it. All the water and sodas sold in plastic. Can we go back to aluminum? And you can get your water from the tap.

I try to remember to tell the server no straw when I order, otherwise I pull it out and set it on the table when it's delivered anyway. Some hotels here are switching to bamboo straws.
