While I agree with you, keep in mind that people call NASCAR drivers athletes these days (they're not).
If dudes driving in circles are "athletes", when the car is doing all the work, then I can see calling a racehorse an athlete. At least the horse is providing the physical effort.

It's actually harder than you think. I won't go so far as to try and claim they are olympians or anything, but it is quite the wear on the upper body and it's a helluva endurance test. So when I think athlete, it's like the low end. Higher than bowling and even baseball, lower than basketball

i have only ever been to one live Nascar event. It was a high roller guy (long story) that had a highrise balcony apartment on turn 2. Anyway, before the race he got some of us a tour of the pit area. Which was really cool for a guy that had never been and had never had much access to see or even know what all goes on in that area. Anyway, while we are down there the crowd starts to build. like you know something is going on but you don't know what? we kept getting pushed further and further into a tighter and tighter group of people. Then these bouncer type guys make a path and the drivers start to walk out. Their cars were already parked on the track.

My first impression was "holy shit! THESE GUYS ARE TINY" I mean they are short, slightly built. it looks like they are walking in socks. it was really bizarre to be at such a massive event and when you see the "gladiators" they are such little guys.

Bo Jackson, OJ Simpson or Jim Brown. It's impossible to say. There are some seriously freakish soccer athletes but a ton of the football players ran track plus played 2 high level sports.

If driving is a sport, and drivers are athletes, everybody on the road is an athlete. I'm gonna drive to Portillo's for lunch. To I get a Pepsi endorsement?

Will the temperature be over 100 degrees in your car? Will you lose 6-10 pounds of water weight? Will you be reaching speeds of 180 mph and sustaining that speed for hours? Your comparison sucks.

I considered him. Left him off only because a lot of people didn't think he was all that great. Certainly in the running but I'd pick Bo Jackson over him any day of the week.

That's like saying everyone that plays basketball on a court is in the NBA. It is a whole other level of driving. We think we can drive well, but just like any other professional sports, we aren't as great as we think.

When I drove the Zamboni I was getting paid to drive in circles just like a NASCAR driver. Even though I was going in the opposite direction and only 9 MPH... 8-)

I have won exactly as many NASCAR races as Danica Patrick has.

Furthermore, those guys who work in loading containers work in 100+ degree environments. Are they athletes?
Dudes sitting in saunas lose water weight. Are they athletes?
And reaching speeds of 180 mph and sustaining that speed for hours would be impressive if it was the driver doing it rather than the car.
