I live in a small town in Canada and if you dare say you like another movie ahead of Slap Shot, you are looked at like a alien.
And if you study the 72 series between the Russians and Canada that Canadians hold so close to their heart, you will understand that the Russians were playing highly skilled hockey and killing the Can team. Only after the Canadians started to hit and bully the more talented players, did we get the upper hand.
IMO that set hockey back 30 years. Even today all the highlights are fights and hits.

If I'm building a team around one player, he's gotta be effective in all three zones, and that's #47, Jones of the Kerry County Eagles, from Ontario. As they say, fore-check, back-check, paycheck. He's a remarkable plus-16 over 4 games with a balanced eight goals and eight helpers. Offense wins games, but defense wins championships, and when Jones is on the ice, his opponents do not and have not scored.
Another franchise player is #68, Reilly, also of the Kerry County Eagles. This is a big player who loves big games. And on a pro hockey level, I really believe Reilly belongs in the same conversation as Blake Wheeler and Gabriel Landeskog. He's a sandpaper player with consistent point production and all the while logging big minutes. If you're building, he's your guy.
But if you're talking THE guy, I'm going off the grid for this one. Take Claude Lemieux and Claude Giroux, wrap them up in one big ball, and you've got the Kerry County Eagles' #69, Shore. He's got the points totals to match Reilly and Jones, but does far more in the shut-down role to help his team win games. Don Ciccarelli comes to mind as a comparable player. I've followed hockey through the careers of Darcy Tucker, Matt Barnaby, and Alex Burrows, and I believe Shore does more chirping on the ice than all three combined. He's got the ability to take opposing players, and sometimes entire teams, completely out of the game mentally. Shore is a certified grit-grinder. He's the Brad Marchand of the league, and the Eagles aren't the Eagles without him.

There's something incredibly sad about a Canadian who doesn't like hockey. It's like being a back-swamp Florida Man who doesn't like NASCAR. Just isn't right.
I'm from the Houston TX area and grew up with hockey, was even a puck boy (careful!...) for the Aeros. What a great sport, it's the only professional one I'll watch now, besides a little baseball. Not that I keep up with players and stats, just enjoy watching it.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

Well, if you spend all of your time thinking about drafting a team and the best you can come up with is to pick all of your players from the same team that already exists, then that seems like a bunch of wasted time thinking. Stop saving up to buy a dog and just buy the Kerry County Eagles.Deathproof wrote: ↑Thu Sep 10, 2020 4:42 pmThey are. They won a fucking ship last season, beat the Quebec Three Rivers Lakers. But skimming through your post, makes me wonder why the Kerry County Eagles aren't the best hockey team on earth.Deathproof wrote: ↑Thu Sep 10, 2020 1:36 pm
I'm a big fan. I spend a lot of time thinking about who I'd pick if I drafted a team.

It's not only players from the Kerry County Eagles. They're just my top three. If I was building a team, I'd also draft Barts, York, Fisk, Schultz, and Boomtown from the Shamrocks. Fuck, I'd even take #20 Mary-Anne and #10 Betty-Anne from the Shamrockettes. No reason women can't play, and there's none more admirable than Betty-Anne.Flumper wrote: ↑Thu Sep 10, 2020 4:45 pmWell, if you spend all of your time thinking about drafting a team and the best you can come up with is to pick all of your players from the same team that already exists, then that seems like a bunch of wasted time thinking. Glad you guys like hockey. I have nothing against it.
I live amongst Leaf fans whom I liken to Trump fans. They cant tell you why they are leaf fans, they just are and there is nothing better!
I believe they are 60 yrs from their last cup.
When the Raptors won last year, a friend (and he was serious) said I no longer had to feel like a second rate fan because I cheered for the Raptors. I fricken lost it. I told him I always felt superior to the koolaid Leaftards that worship and pay through the nose to watch them lose every year.
Anyways. They LeafTards turned me off of hockey. But I would never belittle anyone for liking the sport. If you like the Leafs however....
