Years ago when a friend of mine lived there he said you can drive around with open beer but you can't park somewhere and drink it in your car. Don't know if that's still the case. This must have been 1985 or so. At that time I think their pot posession laws were the strictest in the US and just seeds could get you into trouble.

I think Mississippi you can drive with an open container if not intoxicated. Most states do not allow an open container of alcohol in the passenger compartment at all.

That reminded me of this:

An American tourist faces years in jail in Dubai after doctors called police when they tested his blood and found cannabis - which he'd legally smoked before he arrived in the country.

Peter Clark, 51, from Las Vegas, flew to Dubai on February 21 for a few days to look at some professional recording studios.

But he was then admitted for emergency hospital treatment after falling ill with pancreatitis.

Before he was discharged the hospital took a urine sample to test for drugs and found residue traces of hashish - which he says he smoked long before he left the USA.

Doctors then reported it to police who went to the hospital to charge Peter, who was still in a drowsy state having not been able to eat or drink since he was admitted.

On March 3 Peter was handcuffed and taken to Al Barsha police station, where he was put in a detention cell with three other men.

Peter was suffering hyperglycemia and respiratory alkalosis and had a blood sugar level more than ten times what it should have been due to the pancreatitis.

He was then taken to an Anti-Narcotics unit and thrown into a filthy cell with at least ten other men arrested for drug possession.

He says he didn’t understand why he had been detained as he had not brought any drugs into the UAE, purchased or consumed any drugs in Dubai.

On March 6 Peter was released from his cell and told to return to his hotel and await their contact.

Peter was suffering hyperglycemia and respiratory alkalosis

Over a month later, Peter is still in Dubai and without intervention and says he is facing years in prison.

Peter said: ''I was absolutely stunned to learn that I was being charged for having residue marihuana in my system.

''I smoked it legally back home, long before I ever even got on the plane.

''I knew about the country's strict drug laws, but never for a moment did I consider that I could be thrown in prison over something I did in America.

''I tried to explain it to the police and be as cooperative as possible, but I'm just being thrown through the system.

''The moment I went to hospital, my time in Dubai was ruined, but I didn't realise that was only the start of the nightmare."

He added: “I’ve lost a tonne of weight. No shower, no food, nothing to drink since I got here. No sleep.”

Radha Stirling, founder of Detained in Dubai, is representing Mr Clark.

She says visitors to the UAE who have consumed hashish/marijuana legally in their own country, can be arrested for possessing hashish in their blood.
