Since I've never dived, I have two questions:

1)"Bends" only happen if you are using a breathing apparatus? She obviously ascended as quick as possible. I thought that was a no-no.

2)Is there a certain point a diver starts sinking instead of floating? The diver didn't seem to have to put much effort into the last half of the "dive". Was that momentum from the initial kicks or gravity?

Yes the bends only occur if you have breathed air under pressure and then been subjected to a lower pressure faster than your body can get rid of the dissolved gasses.

Bends happen when breathing compressed air.
Holding your breath doesn't have that effect.

The sinking had me wondering that as well.
When you dive you prefer to be at at steady/constant state of floatation.
Neither negative nor positive as it requires more work to maintain either of those states.
