Cool. Doing a prequel on maybe the best series in TV history has to carry a lot of baggage and expectations that's bound to disappoint many long term fans.Geist wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 2:42 amI liked the performances. Having James Gandolfini's son playing him as a younger Tony is pretty cool

People who make television shows should stick to making television shows. The transition to feature movies almost never goes well.BigRedRetard wrote: ↑Sun Oct 03, 2021 2:13 amIt wasn't that good. It did not come off well as a Sopranos sequel and it was lame as far as mafia movies go.

Re: Geist's official movie/tv recommendation thread
I watched it last night. It wasn't *bad*, but it wasn't great. It was basically an extended version of the S1E7 episode "Down Neck". Except that episode partially involves when Tony maybe first develops his problem with panic attacks, and the movie gave not one hint of that. It was mostly about Kwistuhfuh's father, who was only really mentioned in one episode (S4E1 "All Debts...") of the original show. There was some mumbling about how Dickie Moltisanti ("many saints") may have influenced Tony's later involvement into the DiMeo family, but it all felt so shallow and pointless. It was fun seeing a young and very bald Silvio and a young Paulie without the white hair wings. Good story potential, great acting, kind of dull writing: 3.5/5. A large issue was a big lacking in motivations. People did stuff and said things, but exactly why never seemed to matter for the most part for any of the revealed action. *Something-something* about the Newark race riots of '67, which is how the black folks came into the scene, but it all seemed so shoe-horned in and didn't add a whole lot except for historical context.Reservoir Dog wrote: ↑Sun Oct 03, 2021 2:17 amPeople who make television shows should stick to making television shows. Again, wasn't great, but certainly worth watching if you're a fan of The Sopranos. Shows how Tony became a part (and later, head) of the crime family, but not in a particularity engrossing exposition.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

Re: Geist's official movie/tv recommendation thread
I was thinking of that question, too. It's not really necessary, but major characters show up and it's never really explained who they are at first. My wife hardly saw most of the original show, and I had to stop a few times to explain who they were as best I could. I'm going to watch it a couple more times to try to pick up on some scenes that honestly didn't make a whole lot of sense the first time.

It definitely would've made a better limited series than a movieBigRedRetard wrote: ↑Sun Oct 03, 2021 11:23 pmTechnically, you should watch the movie first. To me the only thing the movie had in common with the show are the names of the characters. This probably would have been a better show because they can develop the characters over time. The movie seemed too slapped together. Maybe will turn into a show. We will see.QillerDaemon wrote: ↑Sun Oct 03, 2021 11:15 pmI was thinking of that question, too.
