i think if we're the only intelligent lifeform (sometimes that's debateable) its a really big waste of space.

you almost have to think in "infinite" terms. there are probably infinite species that are dumber and infinite that are much smarter and more capable. right?

but the over riding thing is that physics pretty much determines that no matter what there is, we are all too far apart to ever make contact with each other.

pretty much- although- can the universe (or any for that matter) be truly infinite? i know we look at the universe as being infinite, but that's only based on our (current) knowledge and available technology.

I'd think it possible there's other intelligent life that is in reach of us, but far more advanced than we are. Im sure they just look at us as simpletons.
