Two photos - Two different people

Police were searching an apartment complex for a suspected serial car thief that had eluded police in a search of an apartment complex.

Meanwhile, a 12 year old was sent to take out the trash by his father (in that same apartment complex). One of the two people pictured above is the car thief, the other is the 12 year old boy. The boy was handcuffed by police and was being questioned when his father came outside and confronted officers. The police quickly realized the mistake and released the boy.

The father refuses to accept an apology from police and now demands justice for his son. There are now attorneys representing the family as they deal with the trauma of this situation.

 trauma/ At his age and knowing his race, I think we can safely assume this isn't his first encounter with LEO

This was about an hour from me. Grand Rapids ,Michigan area. They are having a huge car theft problem, and usually if they are caught they usually have one or more stolen weapons. The other day a vehicle was stolen and the owner left their gun in the car. Usually the thieves are teenagers and then they often use the stolen car to do drive by shootings. This story was just on yesterday I think, how the boy refuses to leave the house "we can't even get him to go to the mailbox or just out to the garbage can". So now they've got a lawyer and are considering multiple lawsuits. Typical bullshit. And they'd probably be the first to cry about their car being stolen by the actual thief "you saw someone that looked like the thief ,why didn't you question them?".

Cops should never handcuff an innocent 12 year old kid, no matter what color they are. They are allowed to talk to people. Terrible training.

the suspect that they were in a chase for (when they encountered the doppleganger) was not only a serial car thief in that neighborhood, but he was known to carry a weapon and he was thought to be a teenager.

I think in this day and age, when you have a little kid take a gun to school and shoot his teacher in the face, that smaller handcuffs have to be made. It's unfortunate but I think it's the best thing to do.The cop when handcuffing the dopple probably even told the kid the usual "you're not under arrest I'm just placing you in cuffs for your protection and mine" type of thing. Better safe than sorry, and I don't think it would be all that uncommon for a 12 year old to have a gun.

WRONG. They thought he was a suspect known to carry a gun. They do this for their safety and the safety of the people around them while they are assessing the situation. If you don't think there are armed 12 year olds walking around the hood, you haven't been paying attention. Bullets fired by 12 years old carry the same lethal force as bullets fired by adults.

Can't they pat them down and ask them to sit on a curb before handcuffs? I've been treated like that as an adult.

Typically handcuffs come out when they think they have their man, someone is caught red handed or if they are refusing to follow officers orders. I just think cops shouldn't be afraid to have a conversation with someone before having them subdued.

i think you need to look into the circumstances that led up to the encounter between the police and the 12 year old.
