I need AR advice

#1

Post by pork »

I have never really been an AR person. I just traded my son an old henry lever rifle for an AR he built. I know its a good build but i need to buy an optic for it. i dont want to spend a lot but need something that will give me good magnification to 200 yrds or so. if i am shooting farther down range i have plenty of options already. i typically shoot a 7mm, 300 win, 30-06 and 30-30. my favorite to shoot by far is a marlin 30-30 lever.

vortex makes good scopes as long as you are talking about the 200 yard range and in. Especially for an AR.

I don't have one yet but a family friend swears by his. I shot it once and it is perfect for the 10mm pistol I keep telling myself I'm going to build.

If you really want low budget but decent quality, look at UTG.

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1018592951?pid=393555

That's a 4-16 with a 44 mm lens for less than $200.

DO NOT get a red dot scope. Those things suck.

That's the closest the range was. 200, 300, and 500.

I usually hit 8 out of 10. Don't need to see the target clearly aiming center mass and applying the fundamentals of marksmanship. I'm rusty as hell now.

wait. you can hit a target 8 out of 10 times at 500 yards with open sights and an AR-15? And, by target, I am talking about something about the size of a pie shell.

the marines qualify to 500 yards. if you shoot like shit you earn a pizza box. most marines qualify as a sharp shooter.

but you are only talking about hitting the paper (as shown) from the prone position. I would still bet that hitting the paper 8 out of 10 times with open sights would be impossible for most older people at 500 yards.

You have to hit the black for it to count. Used to use a 12 inch disk to spot where the hits were and it was regular to hit it several times over If you've got you shit dialed in and a solid position. The breath control, bone support, trigger control, sought alignment, sight picture, and natural point of aim all combine to create a stable position. At 500 yards we also used a loop slung and weren't required to get out of position between shots. Not sure what they do now though.

I'm sure a "shot" between shots would not help...(hic)
