here's the notes on my problem from the receipt "hot water smells horrible, anal rod put in, he has the part" made my day almost.the kids were trying to get the old one out and they were going the wrong way,tightening as opposed to loosening. At first I thought they were doing the tighten a little to see if you can then loosen it,because they put them in pretty tight. I finally said You know you're going the wrong way... well,at least they're working and trying to learn a trade. The old "anal" rod looks pretty weird.2 years old and has some chunks eaten out of it.

try using an anode rod instead.

You're lucky. Most end up in emerg when their anal rod gets stuck.

I just discovered that during the rehab 10 years ago, someone set both hot water thermostats to something well below 120 degrees F when supposedly the manufacturer defaults it to 120. I had fiddled with the balancing valve thinking that was the issue.
