Having spent the first half of my life in Houston (born in Galveston), all I can say is: what do you want from a town built int the middle of a coastal swamp?
It was a dumb fucking idea then, it's still a dumb fucking idea now. But here it is, I now live in Florida, and the lessons didn't get learned here, either.

Yes Sir. Semi-tropical paradise nothing over 200 feet in elevation with almost 50 inches of rain. Pine forests almost to the beaches in Galveston Island. Perfectly able to handle any drainage events from any historic flooding events possible. Now imagine in only 100 plus years, build the 4th largest city in the US with millions of people, cut down all the trees and pave and concrete this whole huge area over. My girlfriend got swept into a creek in conroe, almost drowned, got saved by her teen daughter.

holy fuck. i talked to a friend in Huntsville last Sunday. He said that he was okay, but he said they had over 20 inches of rain the past few days.
