Dry Drowning. Ever heard of it?
Its in the news after that luxury yacht sank in the tornado near Italy. They have done autopsies of all of the people that were pulled out of the ocean after dying when the ship went down. Four of the seven victims were ruled to have died of "Dry Drowning". There was no water in their lungs.
Dry drowning is when you are under water and you find an air pocket to breath. After you breath in the oxygen and breath out the carbon dioxide; eventually there is no oxygen left and you are only breathing carbon dioxide and you die. Dry drowned.

Haven't heard that expression before, but I understand the concept. Makes sense.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

it makes me wonder why a person's instincts wouldn't have them attempting to swim to the surface before just breathing to death in an air pocket. They were 164 feet down. I'm sure it took a long time for that boat to sink 164 feet with all of the air inside the compartments. But i'm also sure the storm was so bad that a person wouldn't want to swim out into it.
What a terrible way to go.

I can only speak in generalities. But the pressure on an often heavy port door is pretty hard even a few feet down with the ship flooding. It's the same with people drowning (even dry) in cars going into retention ponds that are technically not all that deep. Happens a lot here in Florida. Folks can't push a door or window open, and find a little air pocket for some final hope before surrendering to their fate. The heart is racing from panic, and panic is clouding the mind. And breathing in increasing CO2 levels is not at all helping the situation.
Even if you do get out or float up into the open air, you might not be in any better state of affairs.

Well, my mindset, on pretty much everything in life, is that if you know the state of affairs that you are in aren't good, then you change them. and that's regardless of whether they might get worse or better.QillerDaemon wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 2:42 pm I can only speak in generalities. Add that to the list of ways I don't want to go out. Going out in a blaze of gunfire and explosions when I'm 99 with a Ma Duece mounted on my walker or wheelchair is #2 in my to ten ways to die, and #1 it's the ever popular smothered to death while having sex with a big tittied woman...death by snu snu.
