Farm just got hit by Highly pathogenic avian influenza and we are having to euthanize the entire flock. Get your eggs now, this fall is gonna be rough. No there isn't any saving the birds, 90 +% death rate, survivors wouldn't matter as all the birds are actually sterile from what I understand.
So in the next 48 hours we will be killing off the entire flock and moving then to storage so we can get them mixed with material to compost them. Comparing is the best way of dealing with them as the heat generated kills the virus and any other pathogens.
Ask questions, I'm gonna need the distractions.

Fuck, that sucks. Just when it seemed things were trying to get back to normal.
I know it seems difficult but aren't there some birds that don't get it; as in they have a natural immunity? If you can isolate those birds wouldn't it make sense to keep those birds alive? It just seems counter productive to kill healthy birds that show an immunity to the virus.

There are no birds that are immune, Waterfowl are the main vectors and the virus is actually now endemic in small mammals and a lot of cows. As I mentioned above, the birds in the egg laying flocks are sterile, so saving them wouldn't matter. I've also heard that there is a vaccine but due to international politics, we can't use it. Something about if we vaccinate the egg laying birds the meat birds can't be sold out of the country, some shit like that.

OK. I thought I heard from the last outbreak that it didn't affect all chickens. Do you know how widespread it is?

I saw a documentary the other day on how they are able to change dna in field mice that carry the virus that ticks get and spread that causes lyme disease. they can inject the mice somehow, change their DNA, and then they no longer can get the virus and their offspring will never be able to get it either. It forever changes the mice so that they no longer can get lyme disease and therefore no longer pass it on to ticks.

I would imagine that this technology will be able to be used in this as well, if they do it.

This flu changes frequently, there are many different variations, just like with the fly that we get every year. The scale would be damn near impossible as well since so many animals carry it without being sickened.

Who, i shouldn't bother with you, this is kinda bigger than politics. Your whiney, cunty, winning comment shows that you really don't understand what's going on, the scope of the issue and how farms getting hit with this virus affects the entire supply chain in the country. But when your mental capacity is the equivalent of a rock, and you have dementia I don't expect much, but you still managed to disappoint me.

It's extremely widespread, with the migrations coming down from Canada, the birds are bringing it with them, then as I said, there are rodents and small mammals that are vectors that are not effected.

Like in that field mice study with lyme disease, it all starts with locating one mouse that seems to be immune. then isolating that part of their DNA. Maybe, somewhere there is a chicken that can't get any of these strains of bird flu. If so, that's the starting point. Its basically evolution sped up a million years. Rather than letting nature find that surving genetic and letting natural selection weed out the ones that die from the ones that are immune, we can do that ourselves with one injection.

It may not apply to this situation, but it was an interesting solution. Because the "go to" method of solving this problem would be to start poisoning all of the field mice so that the ticks no longer have a source for the disease. But what does that change do to the food chain?

Whatever they tell us, but we used heat. Got the barns to a set temp while using torpedo heaters, reduces the oxygen levels to a point they lay down and go to sleep. Not sure of all the science but we have to use a certain number of btu based on the size of the barn. I went in there to help unplugg the heaters and it was was not pleasant, worst sauna ever.

you don't want to eat those things, there's not enough meat on one bird for a can of campbell's chicken soup.

There is a vaccine, but trade regs prevent us from using it. We do vaccinate the birds for Newcastle but ut took damn near 30 years for it to be approved. This last spring it was almost approved but alas the egg process went back down.
