About once a week I have to confirm for myself that he actually said what the internet says he said.

He actually said "The United States and Italy are bound together by a shared cultural and political heritage dating back thousands of years to Ancient Rome", which is true. The whole republic and laws and such, it was the root of western democracies.

Though I doubt he was just winging that speech.

P.S. I might argue it goes back even farther, to Greece. And Rome wasn't exactly a straight line to today, since it became Imperial Rome and was hardly a Republic then.

When the emperor claimed he didn't have to submit to oversight and any senator challenging him was guilty of treason? Yeah, I think there are still parallels.
