If you could retire today...
and lead a comfortable, not necessarily oppulent, life out side the US, where would it be and why?
I'm thinking Valencia, Spain. Good climate, culture, infastructure, and close enough to travel to a lot of other areas I find interesting.

Sure. Around Frankfurt area. For one, that's where my life changed. The military, my girlfriend at the time, the whole village just accepted me as one of their own. It was the first time in my life I felt like I belonged. The castles are amazing(love medieval culture/way of life) it's close to everything being that it's pretty much the center of Europe and west Asia. Just a lot of wonderful memories.

About an hour south of me into Mexico, there are some nice small communities located between Rosarito and Ensenada. Very affordable living, while still being close to the US if needed for things like health care.

I like Tampa FL. Beautiful beaches and plenty of good restaurants & shopping at a reasonable cost. They have tons of 55 and over communities.

Cheap, fairly stable and only 2 seasons. Wet and dry. If you don't like the heat and humidity of the Rio Dulce area you just change the elevation and go to Panajachel.

I have a friend, retired air traffic controller, spends six months every year in Panama and loves it there. He says his girlfriend there hates when he uses air conditioning. I wouldn't be able to live there without it.

Islands around the Mediterranean. Aegean Sea area around Greece/ Azores in the Atlantic/ Malta because I just read about about the Ottoman siege of 1565. Thousands of years of history to discover on foot.

My Fathers blood line is almost pure Scot going back 600 years. (I'm related to Bonny Dundee, a Scottish King, and a couple of people you saw in a movie called Braveheart)
I've made 4 trips over there to meet family and check out the clan lands (we have a castle ... but I dunna wanna brrag). Kind of got hooked on the place.

There are a lot of places I'd like to visit, but I have no desire to live outside of the United States. So far my retirement plans are for me and my chick to buy an RV spend the winters in Arizona with her daughter and summers in Nebraska or wherever my kids end up.

Was there many years ago. Nice place but cost of living was high IIRC.

Equador is getting mentioned a lot in expat articles. Supposed to be mild weather and the currency is the US dollar.

Re: If you could retire today...
My wife and I are friends with a rather big group of Indians from the south tip of the country, and from what we've seen, it'd be a wonderful place to live. Especially along the southwest coastal area in Kerala. For the haters, south India is vastly different from the areas to the north, and is clean and friendly and cheap, with very few of the problems found up north, so very safe. It's a different and more modern culture in south India.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

IDK, I went on a two week excursion covering Cusco, Machu Picchu, Iquitos and Lima. I thought it was awesome. I wouldn't mind retiring in Cusco.WarmBidetWater wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 12:17 amReally?
