How to take a picture of the Sun at night

Post by Animal »

First, for it to be night you have to be on the opposite side of the earth. Then you have to go down into a mine. And then point your camera through the earth (toward the sun) using elementary particles known as neutrinos. They are a fundamental piece of matter able to pass through the Earth without interacting with any other particle. And this is the picture you end up with. It was taken in 1998.

If neutrinos don’t interact with any other particle how did the picture come about?

Unsurprisingly, I know a lot about this subject. Anyone care to hear it?

A lot more complicated than you mention. I think I read after they got everything set up at the bottom of the mine, it took almost 2 years before they got that photo. Still amazing- I think some people won awards for that like the Nobel.

Every winter as I get older I appreciate the sun more.

the neutrinos are not interacting with the sun particles, they are simply depicting the heat signature produced from the sun particles.

I am a neutrino picture scientist.
