Art Thread NSFW

All the news from the peanut gallery and where all the nasty trash talk fails miserably.
It can get NSFW-ish here: you have been warned!

The person to the left (jesus' right side) of Jesus is who many think was Mary Magdalene.

and notice how the disciples are in groups of three. there is a long list of things people have hypothesized out of this painting.
That's her! ;)
It's not. It's a boy. Sorry.

the Bust of Nefratiti was done in 1345 BC. It is not only amazing at how good the work is, but that it survived this long.

The odd part is, they believe a lot of artists could do this, but it wasn't always popular so they didnt.

Maybe it would even be cool if some of you developed an actual fucking personality rather than being "the dude that only burns CTC". He says something and the same bunch of you pile on, clinging to one fucking thing he said. Offering absolutely nothing to the board other than your fucking C- insults. Do better, because I've got buttons now and I've had my fucking fill of this meangirl bullshit.

May I suggest reading Daniel Boorstin's "The Creators". History back to ancient time of many different fields- dramas, comedies, modern literature, ballet, operas, invention of the different musical instruments, orchestra, etc. Huge chapter on painting, sculptures, etc. Only read it once because not my real interests, but after this thread, I think I'm going to reread.

I think - what if because of who it is and the time frame and people it represented made other artists felt wrong replicating the style? Does that make sense?
I think I understand what you're saying. But I think it was just popular styles. Like when they preferred women especially to be fat, or skinny, or they add extra size to muscles, or really large penises. So many different ideals.

if i had to make just a random guess, i would think that the reason would be something along the lines of why some natives don't want pictures taken of them, because they think it steals their soul or something like that. maybe people thought if a painting looked too much like the subject of the painting that was some kind of voodoo or something.

Ah, I feel you. The larger ladies were Botticelli right? I'm gonna be busy looking into that big penis art era.

It's cyclical. For a time it could be this, but the Renaissance fat ladies were about wealth. But for a time it was about fertility.

i'm just talking about why it was 1,000's of years of stick figures and cave painting style art and then suddenly artists started drawing things as they really were.

Because art at first wasn't art, but information to be shared. Less pizazz more over there is a Animal that will kill you. Or these are hunting grounds.

so, would that veil in the sculpture be depicting the Shroud of Turin (assuming that is really a thing)?

Could be. Although I doubt the Shroud of Turin would be a thin, translucent veil.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. Naples is loaded with museums, churches & palaces. The National Archeological Museum if filled with sculptures and mosaics recovered from Pompeii & Herculaneum.
