My dad had a workshop detached from the house. He and his friends would shoot the shit there after work. Most smoked, Dad smoked in filtered and my uncle smoked filtered. Dad would throw his butts out the door , Eventually they would decompose. One day I walked out there to hear dad giving my uncle hell because the filters weren’t decomposing and dad had to pick them up.

I went just once with a couple buddies and we caught two monsters, one was 14' the other was 12', and you can't keep them at that size. We did get one keeper, just under 3.5' and it was one of the best tasting fish i've ever had.

Why can't you keep them?

The larger fish are the baby makers so are reserved as broodstock. No more big fish=no more baby fish. They also require swifter moving water for a successful spawn than what most of the Columbia river provides. As a result the upper 2/3rds of the river is catch and release only. I've seen some old pictures, early 1900's, from before the dams were built, of sturgeon so large that they were "reeled in" using draft horses.

I fished for them in some slough outside Sacramento. We used these mud shrimp that would cut the fuck out of your hand if you were careless.

All I caught was a buzz and a stiff neck from sleeping in a fold up lawn chair.

Breeders. I have caught a ton in the Sf bay. Last monster was around 200 pounds. Wasted of time having to cut it loose.
